About Galveston

Resources for fishing and hunting were plentiful for the Native Americans that once inhabited the barrier island now known as Galveston, Texas. The tropical region drew Spanish explorers, European settlers, and even a few rough and tumble pirates. The Galveston Island of today bears little resemblance to those early years, although notable historical landmarks add a sense of rich texture to its island charm.

Whether locals are BOI (born on the island) or IBC (island residents by choice), an appreciation for the natural beauty of Galveston is evident. Stretching along the Gulf of Mexico, is an approximate ten-mile walkway where early morning joggers, intent power walkers, skateboarders, and stroller-pushing moms meet for some fresh air. Those resting on one of the benches along the path may notice the sports fishing boats that are prolific in the Gulf.  The Galveston area is an angler’s paradise; dropped lines are reeled in with Spanish mackerel, flounder, redfish, and speckled trout, struggling for freedom. Rock fishing, charter boats, or wading the bay or Gulf, will keep the most avid fisherman happy.

If an early morning tee off is part of the daily schedule, Galveston is the place to be.  With two golf courses, including the recently renovated Moody Gardens Golf Course, and the private Galveston Country Club, golf-centered activities and events are happening year round.  For the water babies in the family, coastal life can’t be beat.  Sun worshippers benefit from the ideal weather, and can be found on the beaches, skimming the Gulf on sailboats, and even water skiing the bay on smooth-as-glass waters. Schlitterbahn Water Park was voted America’s best water park, and locals and visitors make it a priority destination for fun.  Galveston is a bicycle-friendly community where residents can do their errands, get a little exercise, and enjoy the ambiance of their home.

Coastal life in Galveston is enviable.  Homeowners step out onto their porches and balconies to enjoy panoramic views of the shoreline, with the waters of the bay sparkling in the distance.  Penthouse condos with resort-styled amenities are available, easily convenient to services.  With excellent public and private school choices, and three institutes for higher learning, including Texas A&M at Galveston, residents put a premium on educational opportunity.

When it's time for dinner out the choices may make your head swim. T he catch of the day from the Gulf is on the menu at many local dining houses and eateries. Check out Fisherman’s Wharf for some of the best of the fresh, or gaze out over the bay as the sun goes down at Flamingo Steak and Seafood.  After dinner, folks head to the Grand 1894 Opera House, designated ‘The Official Opera House of Texas’, an elegant historic landmark, where a theater production can top off the perfect evening out.  Party-loving clubbers will enjoy rocking and rolling the night away in Galveston.  The Beerfoot Beach Club, Captain Jack’s, and Tiki Bar are some of the favorite hangouts for a drink, live music, and blowing off steam.
